Curriculum
Education Acts require schools to have a balanced and broadly based curriculum which "promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of the students at the school". It must also prepare students for "the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life".
Key Stage 3
The first three years, Years 7-9, form Key Stage 3. The National Curriculum is followed in English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, Design & Technology, Geography, History, Art, Music, Physical Education and French. In Year 8 the opportunity to take German as well as French is offered to all students. All students also take Drama and Religious Education. Citizenship is studied within subject lessons.
Key Stage 4
At the end of Year 9 a wide choice of subjects is given after careers advice and discussion with parents. These subjects are taken in Year 10 & 11 and usually lead to GCSE. All students must take English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Physical Education, ICT and Religious Education. In addition all students must take either a Double Science (two GCSE passes) or Single Science. Alternatively all students can now choose whether they wish to take all three Separate Sciences to GCSE level. This is important for those students who might wish to study Science at a more advanced level.
We also offer an extensive range of vocational courses at either East Devon College or Bicton college where students can take specialist courses taught by college staff.
